Practical Exercise: Design “News XYZ” Front Page


Aim

To design a newspaper front page layout similar to “News XYZ” using Adobe InDesign.


Software Required

  • Adobe InDesign

  • Image (optional – news photo / logo)


Document Settings

  • Page Size: A3

  • Orientation: Portrait

  • Columns: 5

  • Margins: 15 mm

  • Facing Pages: OFF


Theory (Short)

A newspaper front page includes:

  • Masthead (Newspaper Name)

  • Headline

  • Sub-headline

  • Main Image

  • News content

  • Footer (date, price, page number)

Adobe InDesign is widely used for professional newspaper layout design.


Procedure (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Create New Document

  1. Open Adobe InDesign

  2. Click Create New

  3. Select Print

  4. Choose A3 size

  5. Orientation → Portrait

  6. Columns → 5

  7. Click Create


Step 2: Create Masthead (Newspaper Name)

  1. Select Type Tool (T)

  2. Draw a text box at the top of the page

  3. Type:

    THE News XYZ
  4. Formatting:

    • Font: Times New Roman / Serif

    • Size: 60–72 pt

    • Style: Bold

    • Alignment: Center

👉 This is called Masthead


Step 3: Add Date and Price

  1. Create a small text box below masthead

  2. Type:

    Ahmedabad | Monday, 15 January 2026 | Rs. 5
  3. Font Size: 10–12 pt

  4. Alignment: Center


Step 4: Create Main Headline

  1. Draw a wide text box below masthead

  2. Type example headline:

    India Achieves Major Milestone in Technology Sector
  3. Formatting:

    • Font Size: 30–36 pt

    • Bold

    • Black color


Step 5: Add Sub-Headline

  1. Draw another text box below headline

  2. Type:

    Government announces new reforms to boost digital growth
  3. Font Size: 14–16 pt

  4. Italic or Regular


Step 6: Insert Main Image

  1. Click File → Place

  2. Select an image

  3. Place it below the headline

  4. Resize using Selection Tool (V) while holding Shift


Step 7: Create News Content Columns

  1. Select Type Tool

  2. Draw text box in first column

  3. Type sample news paragraph:

    New Delhi: The Indian government has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure...
  4. Use Text Frame Options to link text to other columns


Step 8: Add Side News (Optional)

  1. Create smaller text boxes on left/right side

  2. Add short news headlines

  3. Font size: 12–14 pt


Step 9: Add Footer

  1. Draw text box at bottom

  2. Type:

    www.NewsXYZ.com | Page 1
  3. Font size: 9–10 pt

  4. Align center


Step 10: Save and Export

  1. File → Save → NewsXYZ_FrontPage.indd

  2. File → Export

  3. Choose PDF (Print)

  4. Select High Quality Print

  5. Click Export


Result

A professional newspaper front page layout similar to The News XYZ is successfully designed using Adobe InDesign.
